Care and preservation

Each of the planes at the Swedish Air Force Museum is required to have a care and preservation plan. This plan includes a detailed description of each plane, with a focus on damage and the need for repairs or equipment supplementation.

Pic: Restoration by ÖFS.We have the opportunity to work with the care and preservation of our smaller artefacts. Small jobs are done in our own workshop, while larger jobs are sent to the Army Museum in Stockholm, and our shared restoration studio.

We also maintain a large collection of spare parts for all of our planes. These range from rivets to equipment for which special storage in our storage area is not considered justified. A large part of the objects that are sorted out also end up in this category. We now have a staff member whose sole responsibility is to arrange and catalogue this collection.

We also are assisted in the restoration of our planes by our support organisation, the Östergötland Society for Aviation History (Östergötlands Flyghistoriska Sällskap), which annually devotes many hours to this extensive, time-consuming, and important task.
